In a show of support for the advancements in biotechnology, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) joined the week-long celebration (November 20-24, 2023) of the 19th National Biotechnology Week with the theme “Empowering Innovation for Sustainable Future with Biotechnology” at SM Seaside Cebu City.

This year’s 19th National Biotechnology Week was hosted by the Department of Agriculture – Biotech Program Office (DA – BPO). The 19th National Biotechnology Week celebration serves as a platform for the FDA to showcase its commitment to support and promote the advancements in the biotechnology sector while still prioritizing the protection of public health and safety. The participation of the agency underscores the importance of collaboration between regulatory bodies and the public in embracing the potential of biotechnology for the betterment of society.

Various government agencies joined forces to make this year’s NBW a resounding success. The Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) actively participated in the week-long celebration.

The collaborative effort of these government agencies highlights the interdisciplinary nature of biotechnology and its relevance to multiple sectors. By coming together, these agencies aim to create a supportive environment for the growth of biotechnological advancements in the Philippines.

As the curtains draw on the 19th National Biotechnology Week, the torch is passed to the Commission on Higher Educatio, set to host the 20th National Biotechnology Week next year. This upcoming event will undoubtedly continue the tradition of unveiling the latest developments and breakthroughs in biotechnology, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to empowering innovation for a sustainable future through the lens of biotechnological excellence. In the words of Dr. Claro N. Mingala Director of DA-Biotechnology Program Office (DIR., DA-BPO) in concurrent capacity as Officer-in-charge, Deputy Executive Director Of DA-Philippine Carabao Center (OIC, DEP. EXEC. DIR., DA-PCC)., “Let us be champion of science and innovation.”
