PRESS RELEASE
May 29, 2018

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director General Nela Charade G. Puno has ordered the review of workout and energy drinks in the market. Puno gave the order in the wake of the Kiefer Ravena case.

Basketball player Ravena has been suspended by FIBA, basketballs international governing body, for testing positive for three banned substances. According to media reports, the positive drug test stemmed from a pre-workout drink called “DUST”, which Ravena took.

Puno said this is a perfect opportunity for FDA to reexamine content and labelling of so called workout drinks.

“I will immediately direct a thorough review of these products to protect the health and fitness conscious public.”

“The FDA will appreciate the help and cooperation of Kiefer Ravena on this.”, she added.

FDA is mandated by RA 9711 or the Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009 to ensure the safety, efficacy, purity, and quality of food products, medicines, cosmetics and medical devices.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced on Monday evening that they had received a formal communication from FIBA informing them that Ravena had failed a drug test conducted on February 25, 2018 – following Gilas Pilipinas’s game against Japan at the Mall of Asia Arena.
